Organization CommLink is up. Initial roll-out scheduled for early January, though depending on how they do the "public testing" I may get to create a Void Rangers organization sooner. Initial features will be somewhat spartan, but down at the bottom of the CommLink they've got stuff they'll be adding as time goes on. Looks sweet.

So which type should we list ourselves as? Looks like it won't affect us gameplay wise, was just curious if any fit the general feel.

I'm not sure. A Corp with a security division? A PMC that explores between contracts and runs it's own trade? Something else?

For myself, I think the corp probably works best of the options to cover a diverse range of interests.

None of the above works fine if we are fearing being pigeon holed.

I'd say corporation or organization based on the descriptions they gave and our diversity of interests. Syndicate would be fun though....

I would vote organization, hopefully we would be able to reorganize as one of the others if our ultimate game play lends itself to one in particular.

Yeah, I'm going to vote corporation as well, based on our earlier polling we're pretty much all over the map.

Hmm. Lessee here.. nope, I guess I can't export any data or make it publicly viewable unless I upgrade to a paid account with Surveymonkey, so I guess I should just summarize manually.

I got 15 responses, including myself.

For "What activities would you participate in as a member of the Void Rangers?" the top four answers were Exploration (12), Bounty Hunting and Salvaging (tied at 11 each), and Smuggling/Black Market Trade (10). Escort Contracts and Shipping & Mercantile followed closely at 9, then the others dropped to the 3-6 range.

The Main Avocation ranking averages went as follows (out of 10 ranks): Exploration (8.07), Bounty Hunting (7.47), Salvaging (6.27), Escort Contracts (6.07), Shipping & Mercantile (5.80), Smuggling & Black Market Trade (5.60), Racing (4.93), Contract Killing (4.07), Shipping Lane Piracy (3.93), Raiding Colonies (2.80)

Of note there is that Shipping and Escort Contracts got a boost of a couple places in the rankings vs. the "Which Activities" question due to 3 people rating Shipping in the top 2 ranks and 6 people rating Escorts in #3, vs. a heavy distribution of people placing smuggling in the middle spots. 7 respondents rated Exploration as their #1, and 4 people rated Bounty Hunting #1, which tracks pretty well with community polls done on the RSI site.

"What the UEE doesn't know I do in frontier systems won't hurt me, so long as I don't get caught" was the clear winner in the law question, with 13 respondents. The other two fell on the more lawful side of that, so it looks like we'll be behaving ourselves in UEE space but looking to spend our time past or on the edges of it. ;)

Speaking of which, the support for our center of operations was definitely "On or near the borders..." 11 voted for that, with the other four split between supporting a nomadic existence and going even further beyond the borders.

The one about Void Rangers' reputation running counter to your own was evenly split between not being concerned, maybe being bothered a little, and the "too early to tell" response. On the bright side, it looks like so far, we're all on pretty similar pages with respect to reputations anyways.

13 of the respondents favored the "some grouping, but soloing is okay, too" answer.

14 people want to be gunners or ship crew sometimes.

For the Role in Coordinated Operations rankings, we got 7 rating Dogfighting as their #1 response. The averages went (out of 11, this time.. oops) Dogfighting (7.93), Ambush (7.00), Recon (7.00), Cap Ship Bridge Officer (6.20), Cargo (6.20), Gunner (6.07), Bait (5.87), CIC (5.60), Bomber (5.07), Repair (5.00), and Boarding Specialist (4.07).

Boarding, Repair, Bait, Bridge Officer, and Ambush were the only ones that didn't have any #1 responses, so I don't think we'll have to twist any arms to get folks doing a critical role if we all get together.

Yep, I'm looking forward to our border straddling operation of lawful and lawless operations.

Aside from them being a bunch of whiners why are so many people up in arms about not being able to join several guilds. I've never been in an MMO that allowed a character to be in several guilds.

No idea. I have never had a game where you could be in multiple guilds either. One would think a non-compete clause would be a good thing. ;)

I have no idea where the notion that this was somehow to be expected came from, either, because I can't think of any MMO's with multi-guild membership, either.

I can tell you that it comes from all these preposterous "loose alliances" and pointless Lamp-worshipping cults and stuff, though. People have been throwing together things like the Convoy, LAMP, Gold Squadron, etc. without really bothering to make a recruitment pitch beyond "hey, we all think X is cool, and you can play with your friends whenever you want, too."

There's a reason I haven't bothered with any Void Rangers signatures or anything like that yet -- because most of the quack organizations springing up and openly recruiting and attention whoring 2-3 years pre-launch won't be around when launch comes.

To close out the original crowdfunding campaign, the team (much smaller, at the time) all got together in Austin and had a 24-hour livestream. They went out for dinner in the middle of it, and left a note taped on a desk lamp they had handy in front of the camera. The internet did what the internet does, and suddenly the lamp was the coolest thing around if you were truly a die-hard fan (or, so some maintained).

Heck, I think.. yep. You can buy a replica of the lamp for an in-hangar decoration off the Voyager Direct store, now.

ESO is allowing up to 5 guilds. A lot are adding clauses requiring membership only in that guild, or only in that guild and a tradeskill guild.

I think it's not such a bad thing; I've seen a lot of guilds that ought to be falling apart but manage to hang together because no one knows how to go about finding a new one. Shitty leadership ought to be punished.

For me, I like guild exclusivity because then you can get organizations involved mechanically in stuff like declared guild wars supported by in-game systems and such without having to worry about edgecases where you are a member of both sides of the conflict, etc.

Alliances should be handled at the organization level. If you want to create an alliance, recruit entire guilds, not individuals *from* those guilds. And so on.

The only thing where I think it makes sense to have multiple organization membership is for things like trade guilds and licensing bodies, like *The* Bounty Hunter's Guild or a Mercenary's Registrar. And those should be NPC-managed entities founded deep in the game's mechanics and lore.

WE should be a corp.

We have different arms such as different companies but all owned by a management one.

We have our extreme risk portfolio that engages in active cargo retrieval. Wink wink nudge nudge

We have our mercenary wing that provides top quality security to make sure your package (whatever it may be) gets to where you need it safe and sound from those horrible pirates.

We have our export/import wing that provides top quality security to make sure your package (whatever it may be) gets to where you need it safe and sound from those nosy burreacrats do-gooders.

We have our mining and exploration wings to set up claims and make sure production of whatever we want occurs on schedule and so we can stake claims in new territory.

It's an exciting time to be a Void Ranger - find the growing opportunities that exist for you wherever you want to be.

I agree. If we hadn't all been internet friends for 12 years, I probably wouldn't be interested in joining a guild of strangers two years out.

Oh no question. I certainly wouldn't be looking at random posts on the public forums for guild membership. That's crap you do after you play the game a while and realize you can't move forward without a guild. I may be the exception to the rule though, I hit max level in vanilla wow before I ever joined a guild. Stranger danger!

So, allegedly Subscribers will be invited to the next stage of the next stage of the rollout (there was a small, quiet alpha in December) for Organizations today. So I'll be officially creating the Void Rangers today. Tentative planning is for the full rollout to go next week, I think they said.

Edit: Ahem. It's a beta, not an early access thing. It's a separate test site that will be wiped next week.
