When a California school planned to serve fried chicken, cornbread and watermelon to celebrate Black History Month, some students and parents were offended.

CONCORD, Calif. — Officials at a Northern California private school are apologizing after a lunch menu option to celebrate Black History Month angered some parents and students.

Students at Carondelet High School for Girls in Concord wanted to come up with ways to observe the occasion during a lunchtime celebration Friday. But when the school announced a menu of fried chicken, cornbread and watermelon, other students and parents became offended.

KNTV-TV reports that school officials held an assembly Wednesday to discuss the issue and also sent a letter apologizing to parents. Principal Nancy Libby wrote that the items were taken off of the menu and that the school doesn't perpetrate racial stereotypes.

Libby also wrote the school will hold a diversity assembly.

Calls to the school on Thursday were not immediately returned.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Even though I don't drink I have no problem being ethnically connected to bratwurst and beer.

White parents were offended. Black parents and students thought it sounded like a delicious lunch, and requested waffles be added to the chicken.

If I was still an elementary school student, and they told me we were having fried chicken and watermelon all month long, I would love black history month.

I guess I should start getting offended when someone serves booze on St Patrick's Day, too?

Some Irish do get offended at the stereotype of them being heavy drinkers, but most are too sloshed to care.

I've not yet met an Irish person who doesn't take pride in the reputation, but I'm sure they exist.

I did at one point. Today, not so much. There are a lot of sober Irish out there that never did care for the stuff. They are the ones that get upset about the cultural slur. Yes, it is a cultural slur.

The thing with the fried chicken and watermelon isn't that black folk like it, most of us all colors do. The problem is that both have been used in very racist humor on a regular basis over the years. White embarrassment about past racism, whether we personally were involved or not is more the problem.

As a non-drinking Irish guy, I am cool with the free street cred.

Unlike habitual drinking, which is a negative stereotype for obvious reasons, a common cultural preference for certain foods is entirely neutral. Blacks commonly liking these foods is no different a stereotype than Hispanics liking tacos - its accurate, and they are foods that most other people like as well.

The idea that its nrgative comes from the fact that other stereotypes about blacks are negativr, and we have allowed the racism industry to convince us that this makes all black stereotypes negative and unacceptable. Like blacks being good at basketball, this one is neither positive or negative, it just is.

If it was a genuine cultural preference for these foods, that would be one thing. But, at least in the case of watermelon, there is no cultural preference among blacks for watermelon. It's not part of their culture. It's a stereotype that was invented by white people for the sole purpose of mocking black people. It also has a long history of use in racist propaganda.

So no, it's not like Mexicans and tacos at all. If watermelon wasn't included in the menu, then I could give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they're just trying to pick foods relevant to black culture. But since they chose watermelon, it's obvious they're only going for racial stereotypes and don't care about promoting an understanding of black culture/history.

I don't get this. Watermelon is awesome. Why would you mock people for eating watermelon?

How exactly is "you like to eat watermelon" mockery? Lts of peole like watermelon. It was not invented by whites to mock blacks; it isn't possible to effectively invent a stereotype. That's complete nonsense. Its exactly like tacos. Don't be ridiculous.

An artist once discussed with me a thought or a theory she had about it, seeing it from an artistic perspective. The watermelon is a disproportionately large fruit, vividly colored and grown in hotter climates more than the cooler northern ones (remember, her theory). The northerner would be less aware of it, the southern resident very aware of it. The large round aspect of the watermelon would go well with the dumb fat poor person depiction in most of the illustrations used in the racist literatiure. The concept of the watermelon being used as an artistic subtext seemed interesting, but I am not an artist. What do the more artistically inclined types here think?

She is black by the way, the artist. Does that change anyhong for you?

So are oranges. I'm not sure the theory holds water(melon).

Not in the least. Just because an artist can draw an absurd comparison between a large fruit and racist literature about black people does not mean there actually is one. What is a "disproportionately large fruit" anyhow? Disproportionate to what? Other fruits? One of them has to be the biggest. A watermelon is what it is. Her comment reveals just how little reasoning and how much intuition, artistic thinking, and general emotionalism went into this idea; she makes an absurd claim about "disproportionately large fruit" as if there's something inherent in the structure of a watermelon that makes it representative of racism against blacks, when in fact it is what it is because it evolved that way.

It doesn't really matter what the "artistic subtexts" are. "Artistic subtexts" are worthless as hypotheses; any artist can see almost any subtext they want in anything, making it undisproveable and therefor worthless.

Furthermore, being black is really part of the problem. Black people do not get to declare by fiat what is and isn't racist, acceptable, or unacceptable. The longer we allow this sort of nonsense, the longer there will be a racial divide.

Even looking at Midgen's link establishes this; it shows racist images of blacks eating watermelon.. except that those images would be just as bad with any other food, or no food at all. The article says "inordinately fond of watermelon". Really? What's "inordinately" fond of watermelon? Why is it more racist to be "inordinately" fond of it as opposed to any other food?

Watermelons are entirely incidental to the racist imagery.

I grew up eating fried chicken, cornbread, and watermelon. I'm so white I glow in the dark! :P

Why is it that we have to make everything racist? I don't give a **** what color your skin is, you bleed the same as me, you breath the same as me, you eat the same as me, you live the same as me. The PC crowd really needs to pull their heads out of their asses and get some common sense.

Pardon me while I cook up some greens with bacon and some beans and ham hocks and throw a pan of cornbread in the oven. (The watermelon has to wait until summer when it's at its prime and local.)
