Welcome! It's a good day to be one of the few remaining human beings who isn't playing World of Warcraft. While previously players who set up a new trial account were limited by 14 days of playtime and a level cap, Blizzard announced today that players on any trial account are able to play the game forever for free. The catch, of course, is that players are capped at level 20 until they upgrade. You can try out any of the races and classes available up through The Burning Crusade expansion, including the blood elves and draenei, with no time limit and no limit on characters created.

Trial Account Restrictions
- A level cap of 20.
- A maximum of 10 gold.
- Trade skills are capped at 100 ranks.
- Unable to trade via the Auction House, mailbox, or player-to-player.
- In-game access to public chat channels unavailable. Players are limited to communicating using only say, party, or whisper.
- Characters will be unable to create or join guilds.
- Characters are not able to send whispers to other characters unless they have been added to the characters' friends lists or have received a whisper from a character first.
- Characters will not be able to invite other players into a party.
- Characters will not be able to join parties with other characters above level 20.
- Voice chat disabled on Starter Edition accounts.
- Realms experiencing login queues will prioritize players who have full, paid accounts.
- Starter Edition accounts are not eligible for character transfers
- RealID features are disabled on all Starter Edition Accounts.

I dunno. Sounds like a good way to experiment and see what you'd want to run before signing up. Otherwise not good for much. I don't think the trip to 20 took my very long the first time.

That looks like it's designed for parents to give their young kids accounts (so they don't have to share), with the objective of getting them hooked young....

Huh, two months later, I notice this. Given that I am "one of the few remaining human beings who isn't playing World of Warcraft", I might give this a try. I usually just screw around and solo (on an EQ emulator) in the one hour of free time that I have every night, so this might be right up my alley.

Hmm, this is actually very disappointing to me. I was hoping to use some of my free 14 day trial keys to show my girlfriend the game one day (I quit like... 6 years ago now?) and just play around as noobs for a few hours. However, if I'm reading this right, the starter edition won't even let you invite other players to a party. So there's no way we can create two starter edition accounts and join the same party together... Anyone know of a way around this?

The limit is on the inviting, not being in a party (except those with players over level 20). It would be annoying, but I think it should work to just have someone else (below level 20) invite both of you. I don't know for sure if that group stays together fine if the person doing the inviting leaves... I would think so, but can't confirm. Note also that you can't /whisper people who didn't whisper you first, which makes this even more difficult.

I believe the intention is mostly for players with active accounts to reroll a new char and show the trial account people around. Not sure how well the system supports trial accounts only. WoW has had a long history of abuse of trial accounts by spammers, and sadly you're seeing the consequences here.

Not to disparage the game, but it amuses me how much they are trying to sign people up for a game that came out in 2004.

It's not like the game has been exactly the same since then, though. They've updated the engine quite a bit since the beginning which is a lot more that can be said of other old school MMOs.
